2018 Metakaolin Based Geopolymer As an Alternative Adsorbent for The Adsorption of Copper (Ii) Ions from Aqueous Solutions

The rapid pollution of water sources especially caused by toxic heavy metal ions is one of the most important environmental problems [1]. Heavy metals can pass and accumulate into the living tissues and thus cause significant toxic effects [2]. Therefore, it is necessary to remove heavy metals from wastewaters. Some physical and chemical purification methods such as precipitation, ion exchange, adsorption, sedimentation, flotation and electrolysis are applied for the treatment of heavy metal containing wastewater [3]. Among them, adsorption is an effective method with the advantages of easy to obtain adsorbents, low cost and effectiveness even in low quantities. The use of other methods is limited due to the economic and technical difficulties. Some of these methods did not also give effective results at lower metal ion concentration. For this reason, in recent times, adsorption has commonly been used for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous medium [4].
